For this week’s WorkFirst Wednesday we are proud to celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD) and International Women’s Week (IWW) for 2021. These events mark global celebrations which commemorate the cultural, political, and socioeconomic achievements of women.
One day. One week. How do we do justice with regard to honouring women for their contributions at the best of times, let alone during a pandemic in which restrictions limit our gatherings? This year, we can do so by accepting 2021’s theme; “Choose to Challenge.”
The 2021 theme reminds us to challenge biases, question stereotypes and celebrate achievements. Our actions can affect how we work together, how we view experience versus competency, and how we encourage women in all their endeavours. The hope lies in challenging one’s self first so others will follow. Thus, change comes from the challenge.
Most of us think of IWD as a modern occurrence, but it actually started in 1911! Over the last 110 years, realities have indeed changed for women. Continued change, however, is urgently needed on many more fronts.
We at BPC support gender diversity in our teams, our construction workforce, and in women entrepreneurs. There is so much more to do.
