Hello everyone! As a departure from our usual WorkFirst Wednesday posts, we at Bosgoed Projects wish to acknowledge Orange Shirt Day! Each year on September 30th since 2013, Orange Shirt Day honours the Indigenous children who were sent away to residential schools in Canada. It presents an important opportunity to learn more about the history of those institutions.
On this day, we wear an orange shirt emblazoned with the slogan, Every Child Matters, to raise awareness of the residential school experience. For those Indigenous people who survived, the impacts of the treatment in the residential schools traverses generations.
On a personal note, many members of my family attended residential schools over several generations. My mother often spoke of the people she knew from “Lebret,” which was the town where the Qu’Appelle Indian Residential School was located. She attended Lebret for nine years. As a survivor, she rarely spoke of her experiences there, and she lived quietly with the lifelong effects of the abuse she suffered.
As professionals, it’s important for Bosgoed Projects to uphold the message on all of our project that every child matters. Our focus is to provide a better future in which children are empowered to help each other. We achieve this by meaningful engagement of youth and elders on our projects.
WorkFirst Wednesdays will resume next week.
